If you have more than one faltering system, the minutes quickly become hours, so tools that automate even part of the repair process are welcome. Online service Reimage claims to automate the entire process with a downloadable ActiveX control that works on Windows XP machines. The service could be useful to in-house tech departments of small businesses that have a number of PCs to maintain, though it's really intended for computer-maintenance businesses; this orientation is reflected in its bulk-pricing model. For example, one plan offers up to 50 repairs per month for $149 monthly (a price that, according to the company, will double on November 1). But the $79, three-repair package might appeal to some PC enthusiasts, and it's a good deal—if it works. To some degree it did for me, but I'd say the product still has a ways to go.As you might guess from its name, Reimage basically works by replacing missing or faulty software components with new images. The company says its utility fixes software, restores drivers, and removes bugs—all in about 30 minutes, and without affecting user data. If the target PC can boot and communicate over a broadband connection, you simply download the ActiveX agent and let it rip. Otherwise, using another machine, you download a free boot-CD builder, create an XP boot disc, fire up the troubled PC with that, then download the ActiveX tool.

To test the company's claims, I tried the service with two laptops: an Acer TravelMate 3200 and a Getac B300.
